February 2016 Empties

I like keeping track of the things I use up, not because I like having piles of garbage around, but because my mini-reviews help me decide what to purchase. To make my decisions easier, I’ve created a categorized index of my mini-reviews. Allow me to point you in the direction of my new Empties Index!  I’ll still be making monthly empties posts, but all of my older mini-reviews will be organized by category.

Now, on to February’s empties! I haven’t added these to the comprehensive list yet, but I will before March’s empties are posted.

♥ = products that I would look into repurchasing

  1. Tree Hut Shea Body Butter Coconut Lime – Too sweet and intense of a scent. The formula is okay, feels greasier than The Body Shop body butters. Not greasy, just greasy in comparison. Would not repurchase unless there was a scent that I fell in love with.
  2. Stella McCartney Stella foil – Roses. No baby powder or bug spray. You can’t tell a whole lot from foil samples.
  3. Philosophy Hope in a Jar for Body – It’s a perfectly average and unremarkable lotion. It has a very slight unappealing scent (or is simply unscented?). I wore it when I wanted a lotion that wouldn’t interfere with my perfume.
  4. Maison Margiela Replica: Beach Walk foil – I want to love this, but it smells pretty generic. I keep trying it again and again thinking that I’ll love it this time, because it sounds like something I’d love. And every time it smells fine/meh and indistinct.
  5. Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Lotion foil – My face is really sensitive all of a sudden. I’m not sure if it’s because of this, or because of something else. This is the only thing, I think, that’s different in the last day or two though.
  6. Chloe Chloe Eau de Parfum foil – floral and cedarwoody but also girly and bug-spray-perfumey. Not too bad. I want to try the other foils I have, but I don’t necessarily want any more than that.
  7. Whish Blueberry Shave Cream deluxe sample – Okay fine you’re right, world, you’ve convinced me. Shaving cream isn’t required but it does make shaving better. I didn’t repurchase this, but it did convince me to buy some whipped soaps from indie bath shops and use those as shaving cream. The blueberry scent is a weird fruity-sweet-not-quite-foodie scent. It’s not bad but it’s not my favorite. I’d like to try this in a different scent.
  8. ♥ Marc Jacobs Daisy foils – I KNOW I reviewed this somewhere else but I can’t find it. It’s just like it says, sweet, strawberry, a bit of floral and vanilla. It sounds like it would be awful like fruit body spray, but it’s not. I’d consider more of this, after my sweet/fruity perfume oils are used up (and assuming I don’t like one of them more). A sample spray or a travel spray.
  9. [second MJ Daisy foil]
  10. Sephora Express Nail Polish Remover – Worked fine but it’s way more expensive and not as effective as 100% acetone.
  11. ♥ Julep Rock Star Hand Creme travel size – This is like my 4th of 8, something like that. It’s one of my favorite hand creams. I intend to repurchase if I ever use up my entire hand cream stash.
  12. ♥ Mor Cosmetics Hand & Body Wash Lychee Flower – I LOVE this scent. I only realized in the last four uses that it’s a body wash and not just soap. My only complaints are that 16 oz might be too much (I get tired of the scent and have to rotate other things in halfway through the bottle), and that Mor is no longer sold in the US (hopefully that’s temporary, since they still definitely exist). I’ve got a stockpile of Mor stuff, and I’m crossing my fingers that they re-expand here by the time I need to repurchase.
  13. Tocca hand cream deluxe sample – I used about half and gave the rest to a coworker who was sad about her dry hands. I don’t especially care for the formula and don’t care much one way or the other about the scents I’ve tried. Can’t even remember which one I gave away.
  14. Wet n Wild Coverall Cream 315 Fair – When I bought this last winter, it was too dark. It was too dark all summer. Somehow this winter, it’s just the right color??? Regardless of the color match, the formula doesn’t last very well on my face, and I’ve come to prefer more liquid formulas. The biggest problem with this foundation, though, is that it’s a mess. It gets all over the lid, all over the tube, and it has leaked profusely every time I’ve traveled with it. It’s a great foundation for the price, but I’d rather pay more and be happier. Would repurchase on an extreme budget or in an emergency, like if I was traveling and all my makeup got lost or stolen.
  15. Urban Decay Naked Skin 1.0 sample – UD shades that end in .5 are cool and .0 are warm ones. The fact that this was matched to my cotton-candy-pink face and blended in just fine is making me question reality. Half of the times I wore it, my skin was near-painfully dry. The other half, it was fine. This whole experience was just confusing.
  16. Becca Aqua Luminous Foundation fair sample – Nice try, Sephora lighting. Definitely the wrong color. Did not actually finish this.
  17. ♥ PhytoSpecific Intense Nutrition Shampoo – Still into it. Would repurchase if I ever use up all my samples.
  18. ♥ Julep Bare Face Cleansing Oil – Oh damn I love this so much. I’m trying to wean myself off of Julep products for a while because the subscription is such a gateway to overspending. I’m going to give the other cleansing oils/balms in my stash a chance before I repurchase. Srsly though, this is one of my favorite products of ever. It works perfectly. My skin loves it.
  19. Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer  deluxe sample – I use this as a UV protectant and detangler. It’s okay but not great. What I need is an actual detangling spray, and not a priming spray.
  20. Julep Ta Da! Quick Dry Drops – Works great but the worst packaging. The first bottle I got was low, and every one after that has had less than 50% left before I opened it. Still sealed, brand new product over half evaporated 😦 Keeping them in the fridge does not prevent this or slow it down enough to make a difference.
  21. ♥ DHC Deep Cleansing Oil foils – this performs the magic of Julep’s Bare Face oil, only with a rosemary scent instead of the light citrus of Julep. They both work great but I prefer the Julep scent.
  22. [second DHC Deep Cleansing Oil foil]
  23. Sephora Collection Teint Infusion #10 Ivory sample – Too yellow but it blended out okay… if I’m in certain lighting. Unfortunately in most lighting the color of my face is pretty far off from the rest of me. The formula worked for me. I’d buy this if it was offered in a pinker tone.
  24. ♥ Studio 35 Beauty 100% Acetone Nail Polish Remover – I have no patience for non-acetone remover.
  25. Caudalie Instant Detox Mask foil – So incredibly drying. I used it for the recommended time, and then took a shower and my face felt like all the moisture had been sucked out of it, like fruit leather. Repeat: My face felt dry and leathery through an entire shower.
  26. ♥ Dr.Jart+ Water Replenishment Cotton Sheet Mask – I used this immediately after the shower, immediately after using the Caudalie mask. My skin hasn’t recovered entirely from the Caudalie, but it’s 90% of the way there. Would repurchase. The shape of the mask is a little not-quite-right but I figured out how to add some folds that made it stay in place really well.
  27. DHC Coenzyme Q10 Lotion foil – This reminded me that I strongly dislike liquid lotions. Just… no. They don’t seem to do the thing they are supposed to do.
  28. June Jacobs Pore Purifying Toner – I’m not convinced that toner does anything. This one didn’t appear to do any harm. (I will have none of that “toner removes the last traces of your makeup” bullshit. I already use makeup remover and cleanser. They both do exactly what they are supposed to do, so there isn’t any leftover makeup on my face.)
  29. DHC Revitalizing Moisture Strips one pair- I’ve never used an eye mask before. Do they all feel like you’re ripping off a bandaid when you take them off, or just this one? I expected it to be more like a sheet mask. Under my eyes is an especially painful are to rip a bandaid/moisture strip off of, by the way.
  30. ♥ Benefit Bad Gal Lash Mascara mini – No complaints for this. If the price was right (same price as, or cheaper than, other favorites), I would repurchase.
  31. Supergoop! City Sunscreen Serum deluxe sample – Stings if it gets any where near my eyes, so I used it up as a neck sunscreen.
  32. Bumble and bumble Don’t Blow It deluxe sample – This is my second or third sample and I still can’t tell the difference between when I use it and when I don’t.
  33. Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat le Teint Foundation sample – Excellent formula for my skin, and surprisingly pigmented (seriously, it surprised me every time I used the sample – it’s very concentrated). BR10 is usable but still pretty yellow for my pink face. If there were a significant price difference between this and Armani Luminous Silk, I’d consider this, but it’s only a couple of dollars. Might as well stick with the pinker LS.
  34. ♥? Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Lotion foil – My skin felt sensitive in the same way that it was when I used the first foil, only not as intense. It might just be a matter of getting used to the active ingredients? I wonder if 2% BHA lotion is stronger than 2% BHA liquid, from a practical standpoint. You can definitely apply a thicker layer of lotion. Can’t really do that with the liquid. At any rate, I like the multi-purpose-ness of this product, and might repurchase. I need to find out if it’s okay to use as a daily moisturizer, and if the BHA would affect the efficacy of other products.
  35. [another Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Lotion foil]
  36. ♥ Boscia MakeUp-BreakUp Cool Cleansing Oil foil – worked as well as other cleansing oils I’ve tried. It was minty “cool” but just barely. For a moment I thought the scent was from my recently applied lipstick. I still prefer the Julep one, but I’d pick up more samples of this for traveling. The snap-in-half packaging is easier to use than the regular foil packets of the DHC cleansing oil.

    1. Tocca is so frustrating to me, if I smell a bunch in store, there’s always like 4 that I want to buy, but because the packaging is so uniform, I can never remember their names. I have the same problem with NEST Fragrances. So… I’ve probably tried Florence, but I can’t remember if I liked it or not! Next time I’m in a Sephora I’ll have to take note.
